The kubotan was developed in the early 1970’s by martial artist Takayaki Kubota. It was designed as a modern interpretation of the Japanese “yawara” stick. As with the yawara stick, the principal areas of attack in self-defense include bony, fleshy and nerve targets such as knuckles, forearms, bridge of the nose, shins, stomach, solar plexus, spine, temple, ribs, groin, neck, eyes etc.
The Kubotan is usually held in either an icepick grip (hammerfist) or knife grip, for stabbing and pressure point attacks. Common uses include hardening the fist , for punching, attacking vulnerable parts of an assailant's body, and gaining leverage on an assailant's wrist, fingers and joints.A Kubaton is an effective self-defense weapon used by law enforcement, those with martial arts backgrounds and even everyday consumers. The kubotan is small, lightweight and easy to handle. Only about 5 1/2 inches long by less than one inch in diameter, this self-defense weapon can be easily concealed. Made of aluminum or hard plastic they are virtually indestructible. Today’s kubotans are made with a durable keychain attachment, which is great because it increases the likelihood that you will have this weapon with you if needed. Using one is actually very easy and does not take any special skill set.
The kubotan excels as a loadfist weapon, so use it to enhance your hammerfist and punch strikes.
Finally, the kubotan is legal and entirely unregulated. To most people, the Kubotan is little more than a ordinary key ring.
While the Kubotan is not particularly intimidating, it is an effective pressure point weapon
